The By Farr wines from Geelong are amongst our favourites and incredibly their quality seems to improve year on year. Winemaker Nick Farr shuns the spotlight, yet his wines keep bringing him into it. His self-effacing nature and ability to question his ways seems to work, as he always finds the right answers in his wines.
Even with a healthy allocation these wines sell out very quickly so don’t hesitate if you’d like to drink these beautiful and beguiling wines. 2013 was a very good vintage, on the warmer and drier side leading to intense and expressive wines with supportive structure for the wines to age, however they are a delight to drink right now.
For some it is Sangreal that will seduce with is potent aromatics, texture and complex fruit, but for us it is the continued emergence of the Farrside’s personality that is most astonishing in 2013. Just 300m apart these vineyards are quite different – Sangreal has a warmer north south exposition with older vines in red soils over limestone (the shiraz hails from the same vineyard). The pinot is picked a week earlier than Farrside which has a more north east exposition and heavier black volcanic soils, producing a meatier and fleshier style of wine.
All wines include a 10% discount, and no further will apply.
2013 By Farr Farrside Pinot Noir
‘Smokey imprint of whole bunches combined with a saline edge. There is coolness and drive to the fruit that comes perhaps from the vines orientation and the dense canopies favoured by the Farr’s to protect the fruit from the warm sun. Very high quality spiced-oak sits a touch adrift from the fruit today, but this will be momentary and continue to close as the wine integrates further in bottle and its long life ahead. Even as a young wine there is a very clear sense of identity to its savory content. Lovely bright acids and extreme length.’ AC
2013 By Farr Sangreal Pinot Noir
Youthfully dense and lush in texture – very immediate in its palate imprint. Fuller and firmer in its tannin extract to balance the extra weight and ripeness of fruit. Oak already well knitted in. A generous and warm vintage has meant no issue with early drinking – will please almost everyone.’ AC
2013 By Farr Shiraz
‘There is a complexing earthy and gruffness to the wine which is beautifully tempered by top floral and spice notes, thanks to the addition of whole bunches and a splash of viognier. Violets and pepper spice lead into a robust core of roasted red and black fruits. The firm yet fine impressive tannin structure provides a long and intense tail to the wine. Drinking beautifully now, five years cellaring will meld the wine and introduce more undergrowth tones.’ GP
