Can terroir override the winemakers thumb print? This was put to test by 3 acclaimed riesling winemakers from different regions (Saar & Rheinhessen in Germany and Kamptal, Austria). The sites were chosen for their unique soils- gray slate, red shale & sandstone. In 2012 they all exchanged grapes from their finest sites, and using similar winemaking techniques (except for ambient cellar yeasts) they each made 3 wines from the different sites. Considering the 9 wines come from 3 sites, the results in their youth are quite dramatic, but could time and ageing bring them closer together or make them more divergent? This is a fascinating exercise for all you wine nerds out there (we’re very excited so top nerd honours to us!) We have a set of these 9 wines for sale.
