The myriad of styles sangiovese portrays are at their most charismatic and captivating in the rolling hills of Tuscany.  From the warmer and richer expressions of Montalcino in the south to the more classical and detailed tones of the original heartland Chianti Classico and the enigmatic Super Tuscans made only from native grapes, we’ve gathered together some of the best going round.

2012 Burchino Chianti Superiore Offer $21
This is a steal! Situated in the highly regarded region of Terricciola in the hills of Pisa, old soils packed with fossils imbue a brightness and liveliness into this wine. Sour red cherries, cherry pips and sage notes lead into a fine and classically styled palate.

2013 Poggerino Chianti Classico Offer $39
Biodynamically run by the humble and gentle soul Piero, the quality of this sangiovese grows stronger with each vintage.  Based in Radda in the prestigious Chianti Classico zone this is fleshy and ripe, making it a very enjoyable drop with detail and complexity.


Based in Barberino Val D’elsa, overlooking the towers of San Gimignano, the De Marchi family are known for championing sangiovese as a single varietal wine, going against the tradition of blending to produce a Chianti Classico.  Cepparello is their flagship wine and praised for its elegance, complex layers and ability to convey its sense of place in the hills of Tuscany. Even better, the wines are under stelvin!

Founded in 1967, Montevertine (also based in Radda in Chianti), is considered Tuscan nobility, making elegant and ethereal expressions of sangiovese that are ageworthy and sumptuous.  Eschewing international grapes, sangiovese is the keystone and the flagship wine, Pergola Torte is the most revered Super Tuscan made solely from native grapes.

2013 Montevertine Pian del Ciampolo Offer $48 (Magnum Offer $99)
Lovely detail and finesse, this is predominantly sangiovese with a small amount of colorino and canaiolo.  More open and accessible with an expressive and pretty fruit profile and an earthy charm.

2012 Montevertine Montevertine Offer $97
Fruit comes from older vines planted in 1982, a mix of sangiovese with 10% canaiolo.  Extended aging in large Slavonian oak, this wine has a graceful yet confident structure and a lovely clarity of fruit – black and red cherries, with a subtle mossy tone.

Made only in exceptional vintages, the best fruit is sourced from a selection of parcels and aged in French barriques. Intensely and boldly fruited, this is 100% sangiovese in all its glory.  Never big or showy its sinewy body of finely composed tannins and lithely acidity are encapsulated by a vibrant lift of detailed fruits, florals and herbal tones.  This is a deeply complex wine that will age beautifully over the next decade or so.



2013 Fuligni Ginestreto Rosso di Montalcino Offer $62
Located on the sheltered eastern side of Montalcino, Fuligni’s rosso is bursting with primary sweet red fruits and warming baked spices.  The tannins are silky and polished, giving the wine immediate appeal.  This is a beautifully expressive and pure expression of sangiovese.

2010 Gianni Brunelli Brunello di Montalcino Offer $110
With prized sites throughout Montalcino, this is a complex blend from the cooler northern vineyard of Le Chiuse di Sotto bringing vitality and aromatics, and the warmer southern vineyard Podernovone. Concentrated and layered with subtle nuances of black plums, kirsch and fresh thyme, and a fine firm tannin from a long maceration and low yields, the outstanding quality of the 2010 vintage is on show.  Time in the cellar will reward handsomely.
