| 2002 CHAMPAGNE JACQUESSON SINGLE VINEYARD OFFER |
One of our much loved producers is Champagne Jacquesson. Founded in 1798, Jacquesson’s unique outlook is to express particular vintage conditions and their plots of earth in every bottle of champagne they produce. Unlike other houses, their non-vintage wine embraces the dominant vintage it was created from, helped out with a splash of reserve wine to add depth and complexity.
In an Australian first, we have just received very limited and highly sought after stock of their stunning 2002 single vineyard champagnes from Dizy, Avize and Ay. Vividly capturing their sense of place, these champagnes have the ability to transport the drinker to their distinctive vineyard sites in Champagne and are quite extraordinary.
2002 Jacquesson Corne Bautray Blanc de Blancs, Dizy
Shelf $438, Offer $385
~ From a 1 ha plot planted in 1960
‘…..a wine of highly individual personality, marked by an intense, stony soil signature. This 2002 is clearly ripe, and even as a non-dose it shows an ample, expansive richness on both the nose and palate, as well as a silky, supple texture. At the same time, it's completely dominated by its minerality, its flinty, earthy aromas much more prominent than the light notes of stone fruits and grapefruit pith, and it finishes with length, dimension and grace, already demonstrating a subtle detail and complexity. While it still feels like a youthful champagne, and one that could be kept in the cellar for at least another decade, its intensity of expression is so convincing and complete now that one wonders what, really, is to be gained by waiting?’ Peter Liem, www.champagneguide.net
2002 Jacquesson Vauzelle Terme Blanc de Blancs, Ay
Shelf $438, Offer $385
~ From .3ha planted in 1980
‘Jacquesson first bottled this separately in 1996, and while that wine was rightly hailed as a revelation, the 2002 is even finer, with an incredible purity and intensity of expression. The nose alone is so multi-dimensional, expressing both concentrated fruit aromas and pungent notes of soil. It feels both expansively fragrant and incisively staining on the palate, with a vivid presence and an exceptional sense of completeness, and it finishes with long, lilting length, constantly revealing new facets of flavor. While it demonstrates a perfumed richness of fruit, showing off the regal depth of the vintage, it's focused by its razor-sharp minerality, feeling sleekly streamlined and precisely detailed…. I firmly believe that their choice to dose it at 2 g/l is the proper one, as it makes the wine much more complex and complete. Along with Selosse's Cote Faron (which is admittedly made in a completely different style), this is surely the greatest pure Ay champagne being made today.’ Peter Liem, www.champagneguide.net
2002 Jacquesson Champ Cain, Avize
Shelf $438, Offer $385
~ From 1.3ha planted in 1962
‘…this 2002 is the first vintage to be bottled exclusively from the vineyard of Champ Cain, which the Chiquets consider to be their finest parcel in the village. From vines planted in 1962, this is bold and generous in demeanor, its golden flavors of stone fruit and citrus accented by hints of caramel and spice. It shows a sappy depth on the palate, anchored by both acidity and minerality, and it finishes with ample fragrance and long length. At the same time, it feels in need of a few more years in the cellar to bring out its full complexity, and of Jacquesson's three single-vineyard champagnes from 2002, it's the least expressive at the moment.’ Peter Liem, www.champagneguide.net

| 2008 OLIVIER BERNSTEIN BURGUNDY OFFER |
Olivier Bernstein is a newcomer to Burgundy who has made a remarkable impression with just his first few vintages. Working as a micro negociant, with very small plots of premier and grand cru fruit, he doesn’t own the vineyards but is actively involved in tending them throughout the year with meticulous vineyard work.
In 2002 Olivier worked a vintage with the legendary Henri Jayer which has influenced his non interventionist winemaking style. Unlike Jayer however he uses whole bunches throughout fermentation. While the percentage of new oak is quite high (60-70%) it has been dialled down in the last few vintages. Wine writer Allen Meadow noted on the 2007 vintage ‘As to the wines, there is frankly something vaguely Jayer-like to them in that they are noticeably oaky but they are also well made with excellent underlying material.’
2008 is a classic Burgundian vintage that will benefit from cellaring. The wines possess great purity and clarity. Not as showy and plush as the 2009 vintage they have a great core of fruit, framing acidity and a fine tannin trail.
We have received a small allocation of these wines, please don’t hesitate to secure your order as supply is limited. The prices below are the best offer price and we are unable to extend further discounts.
2008 Olivier Bernstein Chambolle Musigny Premier Cru ‘Lavrottes’
Shelf $172, Offer $147
~ Very small vineyard located below Bonnes-Mares from 13 year old vines
‘Good bright, deep red. Blueberry, dark raspberry, minerals, cola and a whiff of camphor on the nose. Silky, sweet, suave and mouthfilling, with complex, mineral-driven flavors of licorice, spices and graphite. Ripe acidity and an impression of gentle extraction accentuate the sweetness of this strong, spicy wine. Finishes aromatic and long, with very smooth tannins.’

2008 Olivier Bernstein Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru ‘Champeaux’
Shelf $207, Offer $176
~ From 70+ year old vines
‘Bright ruby-red. Very sexy aromas of pure black raspberry, smoked meat, fresh herbs and spices. Silky-sweet and very intense, with the stem component adding spice and definition to the complex dark fruit and smoked meat flavors. Densely packed, juicy and a bit youthfully imploded. Finishes very long and spicy, with a firm underlying spine for aging.’

2008 Maison Olivier Bernstein Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru ‘Cazetiers’
Shelf $207, Offer $176
~ From 80 year old vines
'Bright, dark red-ruby. Wild, slightly reduced aromas of black fruits and flinty minerality. Less sweet and showy today than the Champeaux, but with superb richness and chewy texture to its primary black fruit flavors. This may have more stuffing and power but it's less evolved today and dominated by its structure. Still, the sweetness of the wine is manifest.'
91-93 points, Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, Mar/Apr 10
2008 Maison Olivier Bernstein Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
Shelf $310, Offer $264
‘Dark red. Medicinal black cherry, blackberry and bacon fat on the nose, with a note of violet emerging with air. Dense and energetic, with terrific lift to the flavors of cherry, flowers and spices. Very tactile, extract-rich wine but quite light on its feet. Finishes very long and subtle, with tannins in perfect balance with the wine's mid-palate fruit. This classy Clos Vougeot has turned out very well.’
94 points, StephenTanzer's International Wine Cellar, Mar/Apr 11
2008 Maison Olivier Bernstein Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru

‘Deep red. Compelling perfume of dark berries, licorice, game, violet and bitter chocolate. Highly concentrated and penetrating, with superb sappiness and no easy sweetness to its pungent flavors of black raspberry, violet, brown spices, cocoa powder and pepper. Conveys a powerful projection of soil. This thick but youthfully imploded wine displays outstanding spine and grip on the unflagging finish.’
