| THE GREATS OF PIEDMONT- 2006 BARBARESCO& BAROLO OFFER ~ |
We have put together an offer featuring a collection of beguiling Barolos and Barbarescos from the strongly reviewed 2006 vintage. Enjoy the Barbarescos over the next few years while the Barolos should be tucked away in the cellar, with the exception of the Vietti Castiglione.
2006 Vintage- A very strong vintage, the wines are big and powerful with firm structural tannins and flecks of bright acidity. Destined for the cellar, the 2006 barolos will require time to yield their majestic glory. The succession of great vintages continues in Barbaresco and value for money lies within these wines.
Please note: As availability is limited, we must operate on a first-come, first-served basis, and will require credit card details to secure your request.
VIETTI
With holdings in all eleven winemaking regions in Barolo, Vietti are masters at capturing the individual and enigmatic commune characteristics and bottling it. Skilled winemaker Luca Currado’s deft handling of the wines has been praised by many, including winewriter Anotonio Galloni…’ I can’t think of too many estates in Piedmont that have raised the bar higher than Vietti has over the last decade or so. Virtually every wine that emerges from these cellars is outstanding, and many are profound.’
OF DAYS GONE BY…
Castiglione Barolo is a reminder of how Barolos were made in the past. A sum of wines blended across the Barolo communes of Castiglione Falletto, Monforte, Barolo and Novello to complement the strengths of each other. While this may be Vietti’s entry level Barolo, the recent releases have seen it go from strength to strength. Requires short to medium cellaring.
2006 Vietti Castiglione, Castiglione Falletto
Offer $111 (Shelf $129)
‘The 2006 Barolo Castiglione is frighteningly outstanding, considering it is Vietti’s entry-level Barolo! There is incredible density and power in the glass as waves of fruit caress the palate with tons of richness. Sweet menthol, flowers and spices add complexity to the long, stupendous finish…..’ 92+ points, Wine Advocate #187, February 2010
THREE SUPERB CRUS
The Rocche Barolo was matured on skins for 30 days, followed by 32 months in Slovenian oak casks. More structurally assertive than the Brunate, this wine gains momentum and seeks refinement with age. Traditionally styled, this wine sees no French oak, a nod to the great Barolos of the past.
2006 Vietti Barolo Rocche, Castiglione Falletto
Offer $243 (Shelf $286)
‘… shows incredible definition in detail in its perfumed, floral personality. The 2006 is not as explosive as the 2004 was at this stage, but it is eerily reminiscent of the 1989 in its sweet, pinot-like fruit. With time in the glass, the fruit gains even more clarity while the bouquet blossoms with incredible grace, all supported by ultra-fine, silky tannins. Today the Rocche is soft and relatively accessible, but it is sure to firm up in bottle.’ 97 points, Wine Advocate #187, February 2010
The Brunate Barolo is sourced from fruit on the commune border of La Morra and Barolo and sees the shortest fermentation and maceration time of 21 days, followed by 6 months in old French oak barrels and an additional 24 months in Slavonian oak casks. Of the three Barolo’s this veers more towards the plush style with a composed underlying structure.
2006 Vietti Barolo Brunate, La Morra
Offer $243 (Shelf $286)
‘The 2006 Barolo Brunate is a fat, juicy wine that comes across as more immediate than some of the other Barolos in this line-up. Smoke, tar and licorice meld into a core of gloriously ripe fruit. There is incredible density and richness to the Brunate, qualities that carry through to the impeccably round, harmonious finish….’ 95+ points, Wine Advocate #187, February 2010
Barolo Lazzarito hails from the muscular Serralunga d’Alba region and requires a touch more patience than the other two to show its best. With a wealth of fruit intensity, this Barolo sees 5 months in French oak barrels, followed by an additional 31 months in Slovenian oak casks.
2006 Vietti Barolo Lazzarito, Serralunga d’Alba
Offer $243 (Shelf $286)
'The 2006 Barolo Lazzarito has begun to show the pedigree of this great Serralunga site now that Vietti has backed off the French oak, and the 2006 is nothing short of superb. A melange of dark, mineral-infused fruit flows from the glass as the large-scaled Lazzarito gradually shows off its class. Licorice, tar, smoke and earthiness add layers of complexity and nuance….’ 97 points, Wine Advocate #187, February 2010
----------
2006 Pira & Figli, Chiari Boschis Barolo 'Cannubi', Barolo
Offer $166 (Shelf $189)
The Boschis family, proprietors of the historic Giacomo Borgogno estate, bought Pira E. & Figli in 1981. Today, the winemaking is directed by daughter Chiara Boschis to considerable acclaim. Beginning with the 2006 vintage, the oak has been eased back to 70% new barriques and the fruit shows even greater vibrancy.
‘The 2006 Barolo Cannubi exudes the warmth of this south-facing site in its open, generous bouquet. The Cannubi possesses more opulence and roundness than the firmer Via Nuova in an expansive, generous expression of dark red fruit that covers the palate from start to finish. Sweet spices and flowers add complexity on the long, round close. This is another drop-dead gorgeous Barolo from Chiara Boschis.

2006 BARBARESCO
In general the wines are very good with lovely upfront fruit profiles that are supported by a fine line of acidity and firm tannins.
This Producttori del Barbaresco (PDB) is stunning value for money! It contains all the declassified PDB crus that were initially kept separate in barrel, but due to the economic downturn the winery decided to produce only their entry level Barbaresco in 2006.
2006 Produttori del Barbaresco, Barbaresco
Offer $85 (Shelf $94)
‘The 2006 Barbaresco is a gorgeous, generous Barbaresco loaded with ripe dark fruit. This is an especially harmonious, refined Barbaresco from the Produttori that is also somewhat unusual for its dark, brooding personality. Licorice, leather and tar linger on the powerful finish. Today the wine is remarkable for its depth and concentration, while the aromatic complexity will develop in bottle.’ 92 points, Wine Advocate # 185 Oct 2009
----------
2006 Cascina Morassino Barbaresco Morassino, Barbaresco
Offer $69 (Shelf $75)
‘The 2006 Barbaresco Morassino is a gorgeous wine full of Nebbiolo character. Red cherries, flowers, spices and minerals emerge from this mid-weight, feminine Barbaresco. Today the tannins remain a touch firm but there is lovely purity and balance to the fruit that should emerge in another few years. Sweet, mentholated notes ring out on the finish…’ 92 points, Wine Advocate # 185 Oct 2009
And a 2005 Barbaresco….
2005 Paitin di Pasquero-Elia Barbaresco ’Sori Paitin’, Neive
Offer $105 (Shelf $117)
‘The 2005 Barbaresco Sori Paitin is a gorgeous wine redolent of flowers, ripe red fruit and subtle French oak nuances. This Barbaresco offers lovely overall balance, with well-integrated tannins and superb purity. Today the wine is bursting with primary fruit and needs at least a few years in bottle to develop its tertiary aromas and flavors. This is a terrific effort from Paitin.’ 93 points, Wine Advocate # 179 Oct 2008 (Awarded 2 bicchieri)

| ~ 2007 DOMAINE TEMPIER, BANDOL OFFER ~ |
It is a great vintage for Tempier in the sense that the reds have quite a monumental quality, grand wines brimming with flavour, and they will probably age almost forever. To compare them to something, trying to give you an idea of the vintage style, I’d look to really stunning Bordeaux vintages like 1945 or 1947. I mean, there is one hell of a lot of wine in these wines.’ Kermit Lynch, KLWM Newsletter July 2009
We have been lucky enough to secure a small allocation of these wonderful wines. The rosé is finely boned and packed with expressive fruit while Kermit Lynch recommends drinking the cuvée classique straight from the fridge in the height of summer. As availability is limited, we must operate on a first-come-first served basis and will require credit card details to secure your order.
Andrew Jefford in ‘The New France’ describes Tempier (established in 1834) as one of the two grand old warhorses of the Bandol AOC (the other being Pradeaux). From the 1940s the estate rose to fame under Lucien Peyraud who married into the Tempier family and since Daniel Ravier took over winemaking responsibilities in 2000, the wines have gone from strength to strength whilst remaining true to Peyraud style .
2009 Domaine Tempier Bandol Rosé (maximum 6 bottles per customer)
Shelf Price $67 Offer Price $62
‘Light, orange-tinged pink. An expansive bouquet evokes wild strawberry, redcurrant, blood orange and musky herbs, with a sexy floral quality gaining power with aeration. Dry, dusty and focused on entry, then weightier and lusher in the middle, offering juicy red fruit and citrus flavors and notes of thyme and tarragon. Manages to be both nervy and rich, and finishes with strong cut and lingering minerality. As usual, this is one of the stars of this year's crop of pink wines.’ 92 points, By Josh Raynolds, Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, Jul 10
2007 Domaine Tempier Bandol Cuvée Classique
Shelf Price $75 Offer Price $65
Predominantly 80% mourvèdre with grenache, cinsault and a splash of carignan. Made from parcels harvested across the domaine from 30 year old vines. Darkly fruited with notes of forest-floor and yielding tannins. Great value!
2007 Domaine Tempier Bandol La Tourtine
Shelf Price $110 Offer Price $97
80% mourvèdre with equal parts cinsault and grenache. From a 6 hectare single vineyard at 170m, this tends to be more savoury and elegant in character. Notes of garrigue, black olive and mineral notes entwined in a lean and muscular frame. This wine should be tucked away in the cellar for a few years, if not a decade.
2007 Domaine Tempier Bandol Cuvée La Migoua
Shelf Price $110 Offer Price $97
50% mourvèdre with roughly equal parts cinsault and grenache. Grown at a higher altitude of 270m, this southerly facing vineyard tends is a warmer site leading to more intense and powerful wines with a sweet and fleshy palate. The warm 07 vintage will suit this wine, bringing out the meatiness and ripe black cherry characters.
2007 Domaine Tempier Bandol Cabassaou (very limited)
Shelf Price $160 Offer Price $140
Extremely limited in production. Fruit is sourced from the lower steeper part of La Tourtine vineyard which provides a sheltered exposure on south to south west facing slopes aiding in maximum sun exposure and extremely low yields from 60 year old vines. Kermit Lynch best sums it up…’Cabassaou is close to being too much. I mean it is unbelievably concentrated and powerful. Pure old-vine mourvèdre. Great vintage. Extreme mourvèdre!’
