The recent bushfires in California reminded us of nature’s turbulent temperament. From afar it was heartening to see the community rally together to support those who are suffering such great loss. California, in particular its northern reaches, seems to be blessed with both prime natural features for grape growing, as well as a strong sense of community sentiment. We’d like to shine the spotlight on one of its most considered and dynamic producers, Littorai. These beautiful wines are very limited, and sit top of our list for drinking this Christmas!
Littorai make the best American pinot noir (and chardonnay) we have tasted. Winemaker Ted Lemon’s pedigreed CV (which includes Roulot & Dujac in Burgundy and Burn Cottage, NZ) shows through in his masterful handling and understanding of his plots. Hard work in the vineyard following biodynamic practices is preferred to overworking the wines in the cellar, and this purity and honesty shines in the wines. Through this connection and observation in the vineyard, his wines are best able to express their own tune. Their holdings in both the Anderson Valley and Sonoma Coast are two of California’s cooler regions.
Looking to drink Burgundy? Then don’t pick Littorai, replication is exactly what his wines are trying not to do. Never been to California? Littorai takes you there.
‘Most importantly of all, abandon the quest to make great pinot noir. Your job is to craft wines which are the most honest, crystalline expression of their place and then let others decide if they feel that your efforts are worthy.’ Ted Lemon, Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir Celebration 2013
‘2013 was a copious, high quality vintage and we are very grateful for it. Things are not always thus on the coast.’ Ted Lemon
2013 Savoy Vineyard, Anderson Valley, California
From a valley floor vineyard which is protected by hills, the Savoy pinot is arresting with its heady florals and pungent ripe black fruit….’black cherry, rose petal, plum tart…palate is wonderfully balanced between sweetness and vibrancy…great mouthwatering acidity.’ Ted Lemon
2013 Cerise Vineyard, Anderson Valley, California
Cerise is regarded as the ‘sleeper’ of the estate, with incredible structure, life and savoury tones. Hailing from a high altitude site, there is a captivating wildness about this wine…‘beetroot, forest floor, compost & fungi…tannins dominate the richness…long and pure…over time opens like a peacock’s tail.’ Ted Lemon
2013 The Haven Vineyard, Sonoma Coast, California
‘dark and brooding…green herbs, seaweed, black pepper, moss…great density, richness and acidity…great tannin definition…great energy. This will become a very special bottle with time’ Ted Lemon
2013 Mays Canyon Vineyard, Sonoma Coast, California
Coming from the AVA of Russian River on a steep, rocky and low vigour vineyard…’ bright red cherries, freshly cut flowers, mint and cinnamon…beautifully delineated & succulent pinot full of personality.’
