There’s no denying that more than anything else, every father wants a great bottle on Father’s Day, to enjoy whilst reflecting on their greatness. We’ve put together a couple options that’d impress the most discerning (or picky) of paternal palates.
2014 Luigi Baudana Barolo Baudana, Piedmont, Italy
One of the smallest estates in Barolo, Luigi Baudana sold to Giuseppe Vajra in 2009, who’s relished the task of continuing the tradition of this Serralunga jewel. The Baudana vineyard is located on the western slope and is made up of a white topsoil with distinctive blue clay underneath.
A darker side of nebbiolo emerges from the 2014 Barolo Baudana. Powerful but also supple, the 2014 is a wine of pure, arresting beauty. Sweet red cherry, kirsch and floral notes meld together in a striking, textured Barolo that is a joy to taste, even at this early stage. Antonio Galloni, Vinous
2016 Giaconda Warner Shiraz, Beechworth, Vic
The wines of cult Beechworth producer Giaconda are at the top of every father’s wish list and luckily, we’ve got some great bottles from 2016 vintage squirrelled away.
From the granitic hills of the Warner vineyard this again shows the delight of shiraz grown at high altitude. Perfumed aromas and flavours of blueberries, red plums and savoury white spice, give a wine of great purity and subtle power. Always a sure thing if you’re aiming to impress the old man.
2016 Alain Graillot Crozes-Hermitage, Northern Rhône, France MAGNUM
Why not impress dad with size on ‘his’ day with this syrah from revered producer Alain Graillot. The Graillot family have been instrumental in raising the profile of Crozes-Hermitage and always represent serious value compared with their more prestigious neighbours.
The 2016 vintage provides a density and power of fruit, tempered by classic graphite minerality giving great tension and drive.
The Firkin Whisky Co. ‘The Firkin Ten’ Madeira Barrique No 08 Single Malt Whisky 700ml
Every father needs a Firkin, so what better gift than this gem from the Firkin Founders. Sourced from a top Speyside distillery and matured in old Madeira wood, this rich and downright delicious dram shows honeycomb and buttery pound cake with Brazil nuts and a powerful long finish.
