| TAKE A WALK ON THE DRY SIDE ~ A RIESLING MASTERCLASS WITH PHILIPP WITTMANN & STEFAN CHRISTMANN |
Taking a step sideways from the traditional Pradikatswein hierarchy of sweeter German wines, we look at wines from both the flexible QbA and top tier and Grosses Gewachs categories. QbA can range from dry to sweet whereas the Grosses Gewachs, more affectionately known as the GGs are exquisite dry, single vineyard wines made according to strict guidelines handed down by the controlling body known as the VDP.
At the forefront of these drier styles are producers such as Wittmann of Rheinhessen and A. Christmann from the Pfalz. Both of these wineries are fronted by young and formidable family members, Philipp Wittmann and Stefan Christmann respectively.
From adjoining regions, these two quality driven producers share many similarities. They both farm organically, with Christmann leaning towards biodynamic practices and they have a long family tradition of wine making in their regions- Wittmann dates back to 1663 and Christmann stretches over seven generations. They are advocates of natural yeasts and large old oak vessels for fermentation and elevage, and their wines are very true to the vineyards and regions where they are grown.
We are delighted to host a masterclass with Philipp and Stefan as they lead us through a selection of their wines from their estate range up to their much lauded GGs.
