The wines of Pierre Gonon are becoming more magnificent and iconic with each release. Unfortunately their scarcity is growing too. Named in honour of their father, Pierre, who sparked the idea of making wine, brothers Pierre (jnr) and Jean toil their prime St Joseph vineyards organically. The vivid expression they capture in their wines is simply spellbinding!
Their top wine, Pierre Gonon St Joseph Rouge is a striking syrah made from the best sites of St Joseph; Tournon, Mauves and the old vines (100 years) of the legendary Raymond Trollat at St Jean de Muzols. Late picked grapes with intense and heady flavours are vinified separately, then blended to make one wine, showing why the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. An ebullient mix of fresh soil, dark florals & fruits, smoked meats and bitter chocolate are common flavour threads, while sleek tannins are delivered like a curveball; always exciting and mystifying.
The 2016 vintage delivers freshness and exquisite balance with immediate gratification. That’s not to say that the wines won’t age. Gonon compares them to 2007 & 2012, ‘with a longer aging curve.’ Wine critic Josh Raynolds suggests the 16’s across the board have a ‘wonderful up-front vivacity and clean, lucid fruit.’

2016 Pierre Gonon St Joseph Rouge $113 Offer (Retail $126)
‘Pungent black raspberry and cherry cola aromas are complemented by suggestions of potpourri, olive and allspice. Silky and expansive on the palate, offering spice-tinged red and blue fruit flavors that show excellent delineation and back-end thrust. Lively and seamless in texture, finishing with minerally drive and harmonious, slow-building tannins. The interplay of power and finesse here is quite impressive.’ Josh Raynolds, www.vinous.com April 2018
2016 Pierre Gonon Iles Feray $70 offer (Retail $78)
This syrah is more approachable when young, with evocative notes of violets, hung meats and black plums. Its palate is plusher, with an inky and mineral edge that tempers the intensity of the fruit. Made up of declassified wine from their flagship St Joseph sites and younger vines, it’s a delightful introduction to this exquisite producer.
