Thierry Allemand is a quiet hero of Cornas whose wines have ascended to mythological heights. Having worked with some of the Rhône’s greats, both Joseph & Robert Michel and cult producer Noël Verset, he has slowly acquired and reclaimed some of the best plots within the wild and woolly terroir of Cornas. With just 4.5ha of total holdings, his following is huge and always growing.
He produces just two wines, firstly there is “Chaillots”, sourced from the limestone slopes of Chaillot to the northwest of Cornas and from La Côte, a granitic slope just to the west. The vines here are generally less than 40 years of age. “Reynard” is sourced from the slopes of the same name to the west of the village, where some of the best sites are to be found. This is a very well established site, including some old vines of 90 years of age purchased from brothers Louis and Noël Verset. A tradionalist in the cellar, his wines beguile with purity and sensuality.
2015 was a warm vintage, producing powerful, ripe wines with staining intensity and depth. Surprisingly they have great levels of acidity and a crescendo of tannins, both great attributes for aging. The wines are compelling, critic Josh Raynolds, writes, ‘seriously great vintage and one of the best in a generation.’ These demand cellaring, the tannins need time to tame down, and with age the primary fruits will give way to alluring tertiary notes of undergrowth, tobacco and leather.

2015 Thierry Allemand Cornas Chaillot (Retail $312)
‘Deep lurid ruby. Heady, smoke- and spice-accented boysenberry, cherry liqueur and violet aromas show excellent clarity and pick up a hint of olive with aeration. Sweet and broad on the palate, offering deeply concentrated yet energetic dark berry preserve, cola and floral pastille flavors, plus a suggestion of spicecake. The extremely long, velvety finish features an echo of juicy, sweet blue fruit and harmonious tannins that come in late.’— Josh Raynolds

‘Brilliant violet. An expansive bouquet evokes dark berry liqueur, Indian spices, violet candy and incense, brightened by a smoky mineral nuance that builds in the glass. Sappy, sweet and penetrating on the palate, offering pliant black raspberry, cherry liqueur and floral pastille flavors complemented by exotic five-spice powder and white pepper accents. Spicy, sweet and seamless on the remarkably persistent finish, which displays velvety, harmonious tannins and resonating floral and blue fruit notes.’– Josh Raynolds
