Winner of this year’s James Halliday Chardonnay Challenge, from 613 entries across Australia, the 2015 Penfolds Bin A Chardonnay took top honours. Sourced from premium sites in the Adelaide Hills, this wine has gone from strength to strength in recent years, hovering at the pointy end of wine shows when it comes to awarding medals and trophies. 2015 was a dream vintage in the hills, gentle and moderate conditions ripened the grapes slowly and evenly, allowing layer upon layer of flavours to build. Alluring notes of sweet spiced French oak frame the pithy fruit, careful not to cover its youthful energy and freshness. This is drinking beautifully now, but with a year or so should calm and come together even more so. A truly great expression of the current state of great Australian chardonnay.
